For many grandparents, Christmas can be an expensive time of year, particularly if you’ve got lots of grandchildren to buy gifts for. We’ve put together some Christmas gift ideas and tips to help.

Having a good idea of what your grandchildren’s interests and hobbies are can help you find exactly the right gift.

If they’re into fashion and dressing up, check out your local discount stores for things like hair chalk (perfect for young people to add some funky colours to their hair over the school holidays and best of all, it washes straight out!), cute hair accessories, little makeup bags, lip balms and bubble bath are all great gift ideas. You could even consider buying a few bits and pieces and making up a goody bag.

A lot of these small inexpensive items can retail for just a couple of dollars each, and put together can make up a fun and interactive present. For the budding artists, visit a local art shop or discount store and stock up on coloured pencils, brushes and paint sets. These don’t have to be expensive so take some time to look around and compare prices. Many stores do art gift packs made especially for kids. If you have a reader or writer, a beautiful journal and pen can make a meaningful gift that they’ll keep for years. Classic books can make a beautiful gift for little ones. Choose a timeless favourite like the Hungry Caterpillar, Possum Magic, a Dr Seuss story book, or a classic such as Charlotte’s Web and pick them up on sale from book stores. Adding a special handwritten note on the frontispiece will make this a gift that your grandchild will keep forever and can one day pass on to their own children.

GO IN TOGETHER If there’s something more expensive that your grandchild has their heart set on, consider clubbing together with other family members to purchase it.

MAKE IT PERSONAL For an older grandchild, a handwritten collection of your favourite recipes or memories, along with some old photos, can make a wonderful gift. Choose a beautiful notebook and handwrite it, or, for a small cost you can go to a printer to have it professionally printed as a photo book. It will be something they can treasure forever.

GIVE THEM A GIGGLE If you want to do something a little quirky, why not get a funny photo of you printed on a coffee cup or mouse pad?
